The wolves of the Grouse Mountain Refuge for Endangered Wildlife are retirees from the movie industry. Originally born into captivity and hand raised, the wolves are unable to be released into the wild. The former "Hollywood North" animals are, therefore, being afforded a chance at the most natural and enjoyable life possible at Grouse Mountain.
Grouse Mountain is proud to give these wolves a large, protected home, at the base of our mountain, where they can roam freely and explore their habitat.
In addition to the vegetation and wildlife within the habitat, the wolves are carnivores and their diet consists of beef, chicken, horsemeat, and fish with vitamin and mineral supplements.
They belong to a species known as grey wolves (Canis lupis).
Interesting fact:
Wolves howl in order to:
- Signal the end of a hunt
- Alert others that a wolf has been separated from the pack
- Warn other wolf packs of their presence
- Have some fun making a lot of noise!
