snowshoe tours:
frequently asked questions
1. What do I need to bring/wear when snowshoeing?
Mountain conditions change rapidly. All snowshoe tour participants must bring the following gear:
- Warm, waterproof boots or outdoor shoes with thick soles and traction, as the snowshoes strap right around your shoe.
- Multiple non-cotton layers of clothing including a toque, a waterproof jacket and warm athletic pants and mittens or gloves. You will warm up as you start snowshoeing so layers that are easily adjusted are great options.
- Balaclava or light scarf will help retain heat during cold or blustery days
- Wool or synthetic moisture wicking socks as well as gaiters are recommended but not essential
- Snowshoes and headlamps (if needed) will be provided by the guide
2. I don’t have the appropriate clothing, or shoes. Can I rent them from the Rentals shop?
- If you forget gloves or don't have any warm socks, Outfitters in the chalet sells this type of clothing.
- If you are looking for a jacket or pants, the rentals building has some for rent.
3. What types of snowshoes do you have for rent?
- We have entry level all terrain snowshoes that come in men’s, women’s, youth and toddler sizes.
- Snowshoe sizes are based on height, weight and shoe size. Your guide will be able to help you find your right size before your snowshoe tour.
4. Where do I meet my tour guide, and where do I pick up my snowshoes?
You will meet your guide at the outdoor Alpine Fire Pit at the scheduled time. This fire pit is located just outside the Peak Chalet, and in front of the Skating Pond.
Your snowshoe guide will have all the snowshoes ready for you - all you need to do is show up.
- Note: Guides will not have snowshoes or headlamps for Social Snowshoe for a Cause, or Fitness Focused Snowshoe Tours.
5. I have never snowshoed before. Is this activity for me?
Snowshoeing is very beginner friendly - if you can walk, you can snowshoe. Our informative snowshoe guides are there to help you feel comfortable and guide you through your first experience providing encouraging feedback and tips to help you ease into the tour.
6. I have my own snowshoes and/or snowshoe trekking poles; can I bring them?
Yes absolutely - we encourage you to bring your own gear to use during tours.
7. I don’t have snowshoes, but I have crampons, yaktrax, or some other shoe traction related item, can I just wear these?
These items are great lower elevation consisting of icy hard packed conditions, how ever to participate in any of our tours or hike the Snowshoe Grind you will be required to wear snowshoes. On these beautiful snow covered back country trails it is very easy to ‘post-hole’ which is dangerous to you and other snowshoers.
8. What do I need to know about trail safety on Grouse Mountain?
- Always check weather conditions before heading out on a tour or a snowshoe adventure, arrive prepared for the changeable mountain conditions.
- Ensure adequate time to arrive to the base, take the tram up to the plateau and meet your guide. Plan to arrive at least 45 minutes early to find parking, get organized and head up the tram.
- When on the trails, always follow the signs, never cross an out of bounds sign and listen to your guide.
- Be aware of the natural environment as you snowshoe, you may encounter snow covered bridges, snow falling from the tree tops, open crossings, sink holes tree wells or icy conditions.
- Dogs are not allowed on Grouse Mountain including on the snowshoe trails.
9. I have very athletic children, can they come on the tour with us?
