  • Grinder and Coola Enter Upper Pond 2021

    we have to take down the bear fence for the winter as the extreme amounts of snow we receive would damage or destroy it if left up while Grinder and Coola hibernate.  This means in the springtime we have to excavate the snow and re-setup the fence.  Having the smaller hibernation area allows Grinder and Coola to get out and stretch their legs while we work on their getting their full 5.5 acre

  • The Bears Weigh In

    Grinder and Coola Weigh In Grinder and Coola, our two resident bears, are doing well now that they have emerged from their 2019/2020 hibernation on April 21st after a 144 day winter dormancy period.  On the day they emerged both bears were too excited to sit still on our weigh scale but since then we have started their daily routine of sitting for wildlife staff to record their weight.  Grinder

    Grinder and Coola emerge from 20th Hibernation Longest Hibernation Today marks the end of the longest hibernation period yet at Grouse Mountain for our two resident Grizzly Bears - Grinder and Coola. They went into their den and sleeping chamber on November 10th, 2020 and emerged today on April 29th, 2021. This is a period of 170 days and beats the previous record of 153 days set in 2017
