Bears enjoy some fresh greens and ponds

Thursday marked the re-opening of our Lower Pond Habitat and the final section of Grinder and Coola's full 5.5 acre summer habitat.  Each year we have to pack away the habitat for the winter as we get so much snow the fenceline would be damaged if left in place!

It takes a few weeks to get it all back together and in that time there is a tremendous bloom of greenary and vegetation inside this habitat which the bears love to chow down on when they enter.

In recent years they have even found a good sampling of Frog and Salamander eggs in the pond - but it was slim pickings this year (making the Frogs and Salamanders happy!).

come visit the bears

Now that the bears are in their summer digs there are excellent viewing opportunites to see them interact in their natural surroundings.

Their habitat boasts three ponds, a streamway, a cliff face, lots of forest space and some open grassy fields.  The bears love lounging in their ponds on summer days, or perhaps napping up in the shade.

We often get asked when the best time to visit is and of course our answer is always 'as much as possible!'.  That being said, you are more likely to find Grinder and Coola active and moving around in the morning or in the eveningtime.  During the middle part of the day be sure to check out our Lumberjack and Birds in Motion demonstrations!

We look forward to seeing you at the bear habitat and have daily Ranger Talks at 10am, 12:45pm and 3:30pm.
