February 11, 2009, Grouse Mountain, North Vancouver, B.C. – This Thursday evening at 6pm, more than 80 Grouse Mountain employees and volunteers will ski from the top of the Peak to the bottom of the iconic Cut ski run with torches in hand to mark the one-year countdown to the world spotlight shining on Vancouver.

The city’s favourite playground will be aglow with enthusiastic skiers carving their way down the mountain in wide, deliberate turns that will be easily visible from countless vantage points throughout the city.

“The effect of the Torch Parade in the dark is truly spectacular”, says Toby Barrett, Grouse Mountain’s Snow School Director. “We have had a real outpouring of interest among our ranks to participate in this celebration and I can’t wait to see the results. It’s a very memorable way to mark this milestone.”

Grouse Mountain will enhance the visibility of the Torch Parade by extinguishing the lights on the Cut for the time it takes the train to make its way down. The countdown is rallying local communities across Canada and the world to celebrate the spirit of the Games, and over 500 children from the North Shore will be at the resort to witness the torch parade from a position on the Cut.

Grouse Mountain is now in its 82nd season as a winter destination for Vancouver. Its proud history of developing athletes and encouraging a lifetime passion for snow sports is a strong motivator for its unique celebration of the 2010 countdown.
