Bears Enter Their 25th Hibernation on Grouse Mountain

Today the snow fell and covered up the bears' den as Grinder and Coola entered a deep sleep inside.

With the arrival of the snow, we've closed their front door and now they will be inside their den until the spring - typically emerging in April.

During this time they will sleep away most of the day with only some short breaks to stretch their legs, check out their surroundings and return to their nap.

They will not eat, drink, urinate nor defecate for the entire winter season.

Final weigh-ins

Last week Grinder and Coola stepped on the bear scale for the last time this year giving us their final hibernation weight.

Drumroll please - Grinder came in at 970 pounds or 440 kilograms and Coola was even heavier at 1025 pounds or 465 kilograms!

This represents about a 20-25% body weight increase from their regular trim summer weights of 800lbs for Coola and 700lbs for Grinder.

They will now live off and metabolize the fat they have spent the last couple of months accumulating.

Follow along this winter

Please follow along on Grinder and Coola's webcam page located here .  This is a live infrared view from inside their sleeping chamber.

You'll notice that every day there is activity as the bears roll around, remake the bed, shift, adjust and even do a bit of grooming or play. These activities keep their bones and muscles healthy over they long winter sleep.

Check out the time lapse feature in the upper right corner to see a quick snapshot of an entire day. See you in April boys!
