First Hummingbird Monitoring Session of 2016!
season, but because of a nice stretch of sunny weather we ended up catching, measuring, banding and releasing 15 hummingbirds of two different species. We banded 9 Rufous Hummingbirds and had three returning birds banded in previous years (2014, and 2015 in this case!). The Bears Weigh In
went into hibernation in November at 921 pounds and Coola weighed 1056 pounds and shortly after emerging their weights were recorded as 727 pounds for Grinder and 850 pounds for Coola! This represents about a 200 pound drop, or about 20% of their body weight, for both bears over the nearly five months that they were in hibernation.
